Most dental damage is caused by plaque and tartar build-up. Both plaque and tartar can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, which, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Fortunately, plaque and tartar build-up is preventable. Practicing proper oral hygiene daily and seeing your dentist for regular exams and professional cleanings can keep plaque and tartar at bay and prevent dental damage. We offer many restorative dentistry treatments to repair dental damage and get your oral health back on track. What Happens During a Dental Exam?
It’s recommended that patients see their dentist every six months for an exam and professional cleaning. During a typical dental exam, the teeth are checked for any signs of damage, including fractures and decay. Any restorations, like dental fillings, porcelain veneers, or dental crowns, will also be assessed for damage. The gums are checked for signs of disease and infection. The tongue and mouth tissues will also be checked for any issues or abnormalities. X-rays may be taken during a dental exam to evaluate the health of the jawbone and tooth roots.
What Happens During a Professional Dental Cleaning?
Professional dental cleanings are performed during the same appointment as your routine dental exam. During a professional cleaning, the teeth are gently scraped clean of plaque and tartar using a special metal scraping tool, or water pick, or a combination of the two. Much attention is paid to cleaning at and below the gum line where plaque and tartar are most likely to build. Hard to reach back teeth are also a focus of cleaning. Once the teeth are clean, one of our dental hygienists will floss between each tooth. Cleaning is finished with polishing the teeth and rinsing the mouth with a fluoride mouthwash.
Why Are Dental Exams and Cleanings So Important?
Even the most thorough at-home brushing and flossing can leave behind plaque and tartar, and more importantly, allow dental problems to go undetected. Dental exams and cleanings are an important part of good oral hygiene and should not be skipped. Here are just a few reasons to make regular dental exams and cleanings part or your oral health routine.
• Prevent enamel erosion and cavities: When combined with regular brushing and flossing, dental exams and professional cleanings help prevent enamel erosion and tooth decay caused by plaque and tartar.
• Prevent gum disease: Keeping the gum line free of plaque and tartar helps reduce the risk of gum disease.
• Catch dental damage early and prevent the need for costly treatments: Regular dental exams enable dentists to catch dental damage at the earliest stages so any issues can be treated before they become severe and require more costly treatment.
• Protect your health: Oral health problems can lead to overall health issues. Infections within the mouth can spread into the bloodstream and cause illness. Keeping your mouth healthy is vital to overall health. Seeing your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings is key to ensuring good oral health.
